In 1983, two friends, members of an elite military unit, began exchanging ideas about how backpacks and military equipment cases could be made more modular and ergonomic. Based on their own field experience, they went on to design a line of combat-ready gear. They named their company KATA. In 2005 KATA joined the Vitec Group and under the Photographic Division the company has been expanding and flourishing. For many years KATA has been creating high-end products for professionals around the world. KATA Design HQ and part of the manufacturing facilities are based in Jerusalem, Israel.

KATA established its reputation by outfitting Protection and Security Special Forces with auxiliary cases, utility & protective vests and backpacks. Tough, durable, yet remarkably lightweight, KATA products are constructed to withstand rough treatment and harsh conditions over long periods. KATA has provided an outsourcing service to Hi-tech Industries that manufacture sensitive equipment for field operation. KATA is involved from the research to the development and design stage through production. A prominent example of such an enterprise is the KATA - MANFROTTO collaboration which is responsible for the entire line of Manfrotto bags worldwide.
